Making a house a home

About six months ago, we moved into our new house. It is amazing and to say we love it is an understatement! We have been taking our time getting settled in for a couple of reasons. One is just that it’s hard to get anything done with a 3 year old and a 1 year old running around. The other is that we are trying to be really intentional about what we keep, where we store it, how we organize, and what goes on our walls. Recently, we had a picture hanging fest and it felt so good! There is just something truly wonderful about a printed photograph out where it can be seen and enjoyed. I love the digitals on my computer, but I love the prints on my wall a thousand time more. I love that I see them every day and they remind me of moments that I don’t want to ever forget. I love that my boys ask me to tell them stories about the ones they don’t remember. Most of all, I love that they make me smile when I walk by them, especially if I wasn’t smiling before that  🙂

There’s a ton more that we want to do, but I’m happy to say that we’ve made a start! If you can’t tell, I’m kind of excited and I want to take you a on a little tour.

This is what we see when we walk in our front door. I was completely noncommittal about what I wanted to hang on the big wall downstairs. I couldn’t decide on a single image or set of images so we built a cork board, covered it in linen, and hung it on the wall. Brad calls it my playground. I’ve already changed the photos out three times. The rainbow of images below are in honor of St. Patrick’s Day. I think they will eventually make their way into frames on the playroom wall, but for now they brighten up our living room.

These shelves are still a work in progress, but we have an assortment of photos from past and present that bring a smile to our faces. We have photos taken by friends, family, and some of our favorite photographers, Sara Goetz and Catie Stephens, among others.

The stairwell was a project that came together so magically, we couldn’t have planned it. We dug all of the frames out of our moving boxes and laid them out. We started shuffling frames and prints around and realized that we had almost everything we needed to tell our family’s story. We only had to order a couple prints and we were ready to start hanging. The pictures start at the bottom when Brad and I started dating in high school and then our wedding, college graduation, all the way through the pregnancies and babies that followed. Eventually, we want to hang a big one at the top of the stairs that is us in our house now.

And just for fun, here is a slideshow of those colorful prints hanging in our living room 🙂
