  • Hi, I’m Merrilee…

I’m a wedding and lifestyle photographer in San Diego and I feel so blessed to be doing what I do. I love capturing the special moments in a family or family-to-be. Sometimes it’s the look between two people in love or a rare hug between brothers or maybe even the impish grin on a toddler who just stuck her toes in the sand. My style is very casual and relaxed. I want to get to know you and your family and create authentic images that you will treasure forever. Most of all I want you to have fun and I want to photograph that.

A few random tidbits about me…my grandfather was an obsessive photographer and documented every detail (not exaggerating) of my childhood. You should see the photo albums I inherited from him. Priceless. I like to think that's where I inherited some of my photo skills. I’m married to the most amazing husband in the world. His patience never ceases. He pushed me to start up my own business and I am eternally grateful. He also shoots all of my weddings with me…we make a great team. We have two littles named Paxton and Corbin who are the biggest balls of energy you will ever meet. They make frequent appearances on my blog.

My happy places are easily Disneyland, the beach, the library, and the kitchen. I am so fortunate to live in Southern California. I’m a runner. I’ve run four marathons, a bunch of half-marathons, and someday I'll do Boston. I knit (well, I used to before my boys arrived). I like craft beer and classic cocktails. I'm addicted to Instagram and Pinterest. I eat way too much chocolate. I take a lot of pictures and I'd love to take yours!

Best Camera Tips & Tricks // Negative Space

I named this series Best Camera Tips & Tricks because the idea is that the best camera around is the one that you have in your hand. I talked about it a bit in a previous post, but basically it doesn’t matter if you are shooting with your iPhone or a DSLR, it’s the camera that you have available to you when you want to a capture a memory that’s the best. In the next few posts, I’ll continue covering different aspects of composition since it’s one of those skills that applies to absolutely every type of camera and every type of picture.

Last time I wrote, I encouraged you to get in closer and fill the frame of your picture as much as possible. This week, I’m suggesting you try the opposite. My tip for you is to try playing around with the negative space in your frame. You can use negative space to really make an impact and draw your eye to the subject in a different way. Let me explain…if the subject in your photo is considered to be the positive space, then the rest of the space is the negative space. In the image below, the guys would be the positive space and the empty white sky is the negative space. It’s fun and it’s completely different than if you had filled the frame with their faces. Okay, scroll on down to the next one.

Negative space doesn’t always have to be white or empty. In this image, it’s the tree branches and greenery, basically the part of the picture that isn’t the subject. The bridal party is the subject and they don’t fill the frame. They are actually a small part of it and the negative space draws your eye to them. It sets the mood for the image and gives you a unique perspective on the wedding ceremony. Scroll on down to see some more…

You’ll notice that negative space works really well when it isn’t distracting…when it’s a solid color or texture and when the subject pops out because it contrasts with the background. My challenge to you is to try and take three or four different photos of the same scene. Experiment with the negative space and see what you get. Move the subject around to different parts of the frame and see what makes sense, what looks interesting, what looks beautiful, what makes you happy. The more you practice, the more creative you will get  :) Post a link to some of your photos in the comments below or share them on instagram with the following hashtags #bestcameratips #negativespace. Have fun with this one. Give yourself permission to go a little wild and shoot away. It’s not like you’re wasting film here…maybe a little hard drive space, but it’s worth it.

Best Camera Tips & Tricks // Filling the Frame

So I decided to continue on with the composition theme and give you another useful tip for making the content of your photos even more interesting and beautiful. This tip is crazy EASY!!! Ready for it…move in closer. That’s right, all you need to do is move in a step five or ten steps closer to your subject and fill up the frame before you take the photo.

Often, we think that we are filling up our frame and really getting in there, but the truth is our picture is cluttered with distracting elements that take away from the subject. Get in closer than you think you need to and then a little more. If you have a zoom lens, that’s another way to fill up your frame. Heck, do both…step in and zoom. The idea is that by filling the frame of your photo, you will make your picture more interesting to look at, better showcase the subject, and maybe even add some drama. I mean, who doesn’t want more drama:)

Here are three images with the couple standing in the same spot. They didn’t move a bit. I did! You can see how much the image changes. There’s nothing wrong with any of them, but you can certainly see how filling more of the frame can remove the distracting elements in the background and really bring your eye to their happy faces.

Here are some more examples to illustrate…

The Princess and the Pea

This week I had the best treat ever…I got to photograph little Raya’s first birthday:) Absolutely precious! Her mama, Lynn, created some of the most darling decor I’ve ever seen and it was just perfect for these photos. The little one banner was definitely my favorite, but as evidenced below, the balloons got Raya’s vote. Raya also had family in town and we were able to take some really special photos with her grandmas and her aunt. It was perfect! And the cake…I thought for sure that she would dive right in, but she decided it was more fun to poke at it and play it like a drum. Apparently, her snack of choice is peas so after a few appeared on the cake, she was loving it, making these my favorite cake smash pictures ever:) Tim, Lynn, and Raya, enjoy your photos and a big Happy Birthday to all of you! xoxo Merrilee
